« K-pop vision: a takeover on global culture »

I’ve always made my own musical reviews – or rather analyses – that I kept to myself, but I recently decided to start publishing them online.

In particular, I worked on a side project during one year: I wrote a ~250 pages paper about the K-pop phenomenon and its implications on the global music industry.

As far back as I can remember, I have always been passionate about music.

I think my earliest musical memories were Eminem and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as every 90’s kids. I still remember when I got my first USB MP3, I just loved it but I was already frustrated that I could only store about ten songs on it, and I wanted to renew them every week. This desire never left me since: I always wanted to listen to more songs, more artists, more albums, more sounds.

Style

Musical openness is a notion I hold dear, but I must confess, rhythm & blues got my heart.

After a long period rooted in electronic music, and more precisely in house, disco and funk, I then evolved towards more vocal genres. Now, I’m rather focus on neo soul, r&b, hip-hop, alternative and pop. One thing is for sure, I’ve always been more interested in the musicality than the lyrics, even if I have a certain affection for good songwriters. Also, I’m always practicing my musical curiosity which I think is a key element.

My guideline to keep a good musical culture: listen to what you like, but not only.

I’m passionate about music as a whole, and for that I never stay in my comfort zone. I am daily on the lookout for new artists and emerging sounds, but I also always have an eye on the charts and popular releases. I listen to music as much because I like it as because it contributes to my culture and gives me the big picture. A lot of what I listen to will never make it to my playlist, but it’s essential for me to always be up to date and to keep a good vision of the musical landscape.

Ground

From underground and alternative culture to the mainstream scene.

I have as much passion for the underground culture and its artistic rigor as for the mainstream scene and its massive impact. Indeed, I try to have an unbiased approach so that I can appreciate talent from everywhere and recognize quality regardless of genre, popularity or number of sales. I’m also looking music through its two main axes: business and musicality. I like to analyze industry mechanisms and marketing strategies, but I also sharpen my ear to understand musicology, influences, sounds, singing and beats.

Involvement

A&R

As a member of RadioActiv’ (2019-2020), a student association belonging to emlyon business school, I was an active member of the Label department. RadioActiv’ is an organization of event and diffusion of electronic music culture in Lyon and Paris. The objective of the label team was to find two local artists in order to accompany them in the production, artistic direction, communication and distribution of their record. We produced a digital EP for the house/lo-fi DJ and music producer White Jack and the second project, which will be released on vinyl, is actually in progress.

Mix

By the time I turned 18, I had saved enough money to buy my first controller: a Numark N4. I loved learning how to mix and spent hours practicing in my room. I had the opportunity to perform in many private parties, in different events organized by the association RadioActiv’, but also during a 1 year residency at Club W Santiago. I was mainly oriented towards house music with disco and funk influences. You can find some of my DJ sets on my Mixcloud profile.

Events

At the beginning of my studies, I was the Head of Events of the Student Office of the IUT GEA (Lyon 1 University) during the 2015-2016 mandate. I was in charge of the entire organization of the twelve events organized over the year: renting and partnerships with the clubs, communication, ticket sales, treasury, on-site supervision, supplies, logistics, line-up, etc. Later with RadioActiv’ I also participated in the organization of the multiple events as a support member.
